What You Should Know about Receding Gums

Receding gums can be easily considered as one of the first signs of periodontal disease. This condition is problematic because the gaps between the teeth and gums are a safe haven for harmful bacteria. Without treatment, this can eventually lead to severe damage of the supporting tissue and gums.

Causes of receding gums

There are a number of reasons why gums recede and the following are a few of them:

  1. There are people who are more susceptible to periodontal diseases like receding gums. This is determined by the genes and regardless of how well you care for your teeth, you may be predisposed to this problem.

  2. For women, changes in the hormone levels can result in sensitivity to the gums. This can easily cause gum recession. For instance, menopause, puberty, and pregnancy are among the leading factors for this problem in women.

  3. Those who do not take proper care of their dental hygiene are highly susceptible to gum recession. Without regular brushing and flossing, there will be plaque build-up in the teeth that can turn to calculus. This is a form of hard substance that is only removable through professional dental cleaning.

  4. Your gums can easily recede if you brush your teeth too aggressively. It’s important that you brush them the right way using a soft bristle toothbrush. This can also help in preventing the enamel of the teeth to wear away.

  5. Habitual use of tobacco products is the leading cause of gum recession and a multitude of dental health problems. This is because tobacco usage can cause the build-up of sticky plaque, which is immensely difficult to clean and remove.

  6. Having crooked or misaligned teeth could put you at a higher risk of developing gum recession. If the teeth do not meet evenly, too much force can be placed and result in recession of the gums.

Although some of the causes of gum recession cannot be controlled, you can still take several steps to prevent this problem. For instance, taking proper care of your dental hygiene and cutting down on tobacco products could be of great help.
